I believe Counselling is a space where you can come exactly as you are — without judgement or expectation. My work is about helping you understand yourself more deeply and gently uncovering the patterns that shape how you think, feel and relate to others.
My name is Emma Bartley and I am a Qualified and Accredited Counsellor in Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham.
I’m a warm, friendly and empathic person, and a natural listener. I really care about giving people the space to be truly heard — something that often gets lost in the everydayness of life. I’m passionate about helping people learn to trust their own thoughts and feelings, and I see that as a central part of my work.
I have over 20 years’ experience in talking therapies. My journey began as a volunteer with the Samaritans, supporting people experiencing suicidal thoughts. From there, I moved into Counselling full time, qualifying as a Psychodynamic Counsellor.
My main area of focus is working with adults who have experienced difficulties in childhood or who feel their early experiences still affect them today. This isn’t always linked to a specific trauma such as abuse, neglect or bereavement — sometimes it’s the more subtle experiences, like having a complicated or emotionally distant relationship with a parent. These early patterns can have a lasting influence on how we feel about ourselves and relate to others.
Working with couples is another part of my practice that I really enjoy. My Systemic Training taught me to recognise the difference between intent and the misunderstanding of intent. I pay close attention to what happens between partners — not just what’s said, but how it’s said (or not said) and how it’s received. Helping couples notice these moments, communicate more clearly and truly hear each other is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
I work with children too, particularly those struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety or worry, which can sometimes show up as unpredictable behaviour at home or school. Many children find it hard to put their feelings into words, and part of my role is to help them make sense of what’s going on inside. I also support parents alongside my work with their child.
I run a private practice in Bishops Cleeve, where I see Adults, Couples, Children and Families. Appointments are available during the day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and in the evenings on Monday and Wednesday.
