Counselling For Couples

I really enjoy working with couples! I’m passionate about noticing the subtleties in body language and those moments when one partner misunderstands or reacts to something their partner didn’t intend. It’s fascinating how often someone’s intent isn’t what the other person hears. Supporting couples to explore intent versus outcome can be incredibly powerful.

While understanding the content of what is being said matters, what’s even more crucial is how people communicate with one another. Capturing these moments is a vital part of the work. Helping couples truly hear each other is at the heart of what I do.

I pay close attention to what happens between partners — not just what’s said, but how it’s said (or not said) and how it’s received. So often, what one person intends to say isn’t what the other hears. Recognising that difference between intent and the misunderstanding of intent can be transformative. Helping couples notice these moments, communicate more clearly and truly hear one another is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

Every relationship has its moments of closeness and its moments of distance. Sometimes life events, past experiences or unspoken feelings can get in the way of truly understanding one another. Even couples who usually get along well can find themselves struggling to find the right words or to really connect.

Talking about sensitive issues at home can feel too intense, so things get avoided or turn into arguments. Having someone neutral in the room who can ask the difficult questions, observe what might otherwise go unseen and keep conversations on track can make all the difference.

While understanding what is being talked about is important, how couples communicate often matters even more. Capturing these moments of interaction — the subtle shifts, tone changes and reactions — helps bring deeper understanding and connection.

Some couples arrive at a crisis point; others simply want to strengthen their relationship and communicate in a clearer, more connected way. I welcome both. Many couples return from time to time to explore a specific challenge or simply because they find the process helpful and grounding.

At the start, it’s important to build trust and a sense of safety. Sometimes I meet with each partner individually to understand their history and perspective, although this isn’t essential. My goal is to create a balanced, supportive space where both people feel heard, respected and safe to express their thoughts and feelings openly.
